The poor rose up under the guidance of Ril Giddeis, brother to Hyiome, who claims that he has seen the face of God and that he has been sent to end inequality, he calls it the Holy War. The poor greatly outnumber the rich, though many of the poor fight for the rich, under promise of reward or threat of punishment. Hyiome grudgingly sides with his family on the side of the rich and commands powerful mechanical armies against his brother's guerrilla militias. Seven years into the war, the brothers' father Gid Koldeis, frustrated with the stalemate, secretly hires an assassin named Kris Orthanos to kill his older son. After Rils is dead, Hyiome discovers the plot and goes mad with rage. Using the steam-driven army, Hyiome assaults his own city, killing thousands, including his father and mother. Blinded by grief and unable to wash the blood from his hands, Hyiome alters the steam-core engine which powers the city, causing it to explode, isntantly killing him and destroying most of the automatons in his command.
